Editorial policy
How FirstPaws researches, writes and updates its guides.
Last updated October 17, 2026
Our goal
We publish practical guides for first-time dog owners. A guide is only worth publishing if it answers a real question clearly and leaves the reader with a concrete next step.
How a guide is made
- Research. We start from published guidance by recognised professional bodies and established reference material, and note where advice differs between sources or countries.
- Drafting. We use writing tools, including AI-assisted drafting, to help structure and draft articles. No draft is published as-is.
- Editing and fact-checking. An editor checks every figure, schedule and safety statement against the source guidance, removes anything we cannot support, and rewrites for clarity.
- Review. We revisit guides regularly and when guidance changes. The date shown on each article is the last time it was meaningfully updated.
Independence
We do not accept payment to cover or recommend products, and advertisers have no say over what we write. Where we discuss products, we describe types and features rather than promoting specific brands.
Health and safety information
Health and nutrition guides are written against published guidance from the AAHA, WSAVA and AVMA. They are general information, not a substitute for advice from your own veterinarian.
Corrections
If you spot an error, please tell us. We review every report and correct mistakes promptly, noting significant corrections on the article.
